How to treat puppy diarrhea

One day your labrador will get diarrhea. Or you already looking for an answer to a question what if your dog has diarrhea.

Our Cheepsus had this issue couple times already. There is almost no way how you could prepare for this. However, it is good to know what to do if your dog has diarrhea.

Reasons why your dog might have diarrhea

There are a number of causes of diarrhea in a puppy:

  1. Stress
  2. Change in diet
  3. Ingestion of a foreign object
  4. Parasites
  5. Viral infection

It's important to keep a close eye on a puppy with diarrhea. Because very young dogs can get much sicker much faster than an older animal.

Labrador retrievers and diarrhea

Labradors love to eat anything that they find on the ground. So they can catch a parasite or a virus that can cause diarrhea very fast. Our dog eats leaves, sticks, grass and all other crap that he finds on the ground. Obviously on all these things there can be parasites from other animals. It is unlikely that you will be able to teach your labrador not to put random items into their mouth. So it is better to know what to do once diarrhea starts.

If your puppy is having diarrhea, there's no reason to panic unless the problem is very severe. However, you should watch your puppy carefully and if the problem doesn't resolve within one or two potty sessions, you should make an appointment with your pet's veterinarian or visit an animal emergency clinic. Young puppies can become dangerously dehydrated in 24 hours or less.

Bland food diet

If your puppy has diarrhea you should immediately switch to bland food diet.  When Cheepsus starts to have diarrhea we always put him on chicken and rice diet. You can find more about bland food diet here.
